Yarn Paradise!

IMG_3780

I spent three glorious hours in the showroom/warehouse of Yarnmarket in Pickerington, OH last week! They are a mail order yarn business that lets walk-ins shop their warehouse and it is half an hour from Columbus.  I took my friend Chris to explore and we were in HEAVEN!

IMG_3783

It was my first time there also and besides all the gorgeous yarn from every yarn vendor all over the world….they had a library/shop of foreign knitting magazines!!!! Years of them…..the ones I used to get in France and the ones I made my husband get me from Germany and the Italian ones…ALL of them!  Better than Disneyland!  It took hours to go through just those magazines and the American ones and Chris found 5 she wanted.

Then she needed to find the yarn to go with the 2 sweaters she chose….oohh, the selection! The showroom has one skein of each type of yarn….after you fondle them and select, then you can go to the bin in the warehouse and see the available colors and quantity. We were up the ladder, down the ladder, up the ladder!

I will just go there next time I have a knitting project since the selection is so large and if you can’t find it there, then it doesn’t exist!  So, if you are coming to OHIO for the quilting shows and have an interest in yarn, it’s a MUST SEE destination….bring your credit card! It won’t disappoint!

Quilting Season opens in Ohio!

I started this blog last year in June. Ohio is full of quilt shows once summer starts.  At the end of the month starts Quilt National in Athens and then National Quilting Association show for a weekend and Quilt Surface Design Symposium for two weeks and a show at the Riffe Center downtown called Happiness: Quilted Expressions and a show in Coshocton called Pushing the Surface:Contemporary Art Quilts that has a Noriko Endo piece and today the first one for me.

Our local Mc Connell Arts Center of Worthington has a show on now thru July 4 called BASTED VISION.  It’s the work of a small guild of art quilters aptly named “Off Our Blocks”.  I know several of these women and they are a talented group.

I particularly like the work of Sharon Vitt. This hand dyed fabric is so vibrant that it looks like silk.

These small quilts below by Elizabeth Palmer-Spilker represent the twelve months.

Below is a 3-dimensional quilt by Linda Goldfarb who once taught at my boys’ elementary school. I love the effect she gets with these embroidered elements.

This quilt by Ann Thomas has 3-D leaves and the pants are actual folded fabric for a whimsical touch.

There were many other wonderful art pieces…if you are in the neighborhood, go visit the Arts Center.

This is great start to Quilting Season in Ohio!

A class with Noriko Endo

005

What a dynamic, energetic, joyful septuagenarian Noriko is!  She starts the class by saying, “I want to be your mom today!”  And shortly people are calling her for assistance…”MOM!”

There were 22 of us in the class and everyone made a very successful naturescape from tiny matchstick size pieces of fabric. Noriko helped us select a photograph to work from and then we sprinkled our confetti onto the batting.  When we got to where we thought it was close to being finished, we’d call ‘Mom’ over and she’d do her ‘magic’ on our piece.  I, of course, was skeptical about this so called magic but….she sprinkled on some accent colors and some black fabric the size of sesame seeds and it brought the quilt to life! She did have the magic touch!  Everyone was so happy with their piece!

The class was so much fun and we got most of the quilt finished in 6 hours and thoroughly enjoyed the class. If you ever get a chance to take one, I highly recommend it. She’ll be teaching in Houston at Quilt Festival this November again!

Take a look at the class work!

I waited until 8:31pm the day before the show opened to look online to see if it won a prize, but alas…it didn’t win an award this time.  Philippa said this quilt took almost a year to design and create as most of her quilts do. She starts by dyeing her own fabrics and ends by quilting with lots of thread over every square inch of the background.  I think it is incredibly beautiful with her amazing signature free motion stitching.

Congratulations to all the winners this year! There were some sensational quilts!

GIVEAWAY TO WIN LAURA WASILOWSKI’S BOOK IS STILL GOING ON THRU MAY 5 SO LEAVE COMMENTS ON POST BELOW!!
